City of Bloomfield Hills Plays Pivotal Role in Knollenberg, Moss, Raczkowski Nail Biter decided by 72 votes.

What can you say about the 13th State Senate  District  in the State of Michigan where in it's inaugural year the number of Precincts (115) exceeded the margin of victory (72 votes out of
24,255 cast) ? Well there were five candidates. Two minor ones who drew a combined total of less than 2,000 votes and the big three consisting of Marty Knollenberg, Chuck Moss, and Rocky Raczkowski. The Big three had a lot in common. In 2007 they were all elected state reps and all went to Lansing. They each served three, two year terms before term limits gave them the boot.

They have been scrambling ever since. Rocky ran for US  Senate in 2002 and lost. In 2010 he ran US Congress and lost. Marty ran for County Treasurer in 2012 and lost. In 2013 he ran for Mayor of Troy and lost. Candidate  Moss was critical of such antics declaring in a cardboard mailing sent to City of Bloomfield Hills  residents, "The Definition of a politician...run for office, lose, and run over and over again.

That  definition could also be applied Abraham  Lincoln, or Winston Churchill.  In fact one could argue that only reason Churchill finally made Prime Minister  was that the Luftwaffe was bombing London and what was left of the British Army was surrounded at Dunkirk.

In the very first election after the war  however  Churchill was voted out  and replaced by one Clement Attlee prompting Sir Winston to remark, "An empty car drove up and out stepped Clement Attlee."

In looking at the numbers Third Place finisher Chuck Moss  won every precinct  in Birmingham and the City of Bloomfield Hills except Bloomfield Hills 2  which votes at the  Congregational  Church. Moss won The City of Birmingham  by 259 votes over his closest competitor  Rocky.

Moss did not however carry the City of Bloomfield Hills. Moss won Precinct One (City Hall by) a single vote over  Knollenberg but lost Precinct 2 by 18 votes to Knollenberg who carried the City.

Rocky finished third behind  Knollenberg  by 62 votes.

Moss would finish the election with 4,929 votes. Rocky would finish with 8,716 and  Knollenberg with 8788.

The difference  between Knollenberg winning and Rocky losing was 73 votes. By now the candidates have been over the numbers a thousand times because that is what politicians do. The issue  at hand ? Where could 73  votes be had last Tuesday ? There were  big precincts (4 over 400) voters and all with exception of Precinct 1 in the City or Bloomfield Hills  went for  Rocky.

If you look at big but not that big precincts, the 200 and 300 voter precincts generally went to Knollenberg who obviously benefited from his run for Mayor of Troy and County Treasurer.

The Rocky vote total was a surprise. and quite possibly  aresult of the logistics learned from runs for Congress and the US senate.

If there was an edge it would seem to go the Knollenberg  king of itty bitty with local elections and small precincts. Rocky did well  in the Rochester bigs but Knollenberg neutralized that with the  numerous Troy/Clawson smalls.

73 votes are hard to find in big  precincts. They are easier to find  in the small precincts where little things make a difference. Like rain or no rain. A person appearance. Or more volunteers.

We know that of the 24,000 votes cast there  was a 62 vote margin of victory in Bloomfield Hills precinct 2 and probably another 13 votes to be had  less than a mile up the road at Bloomfield Hills Precinct 1. Knollenberg got to it.  Rocky did not. Elections are strange in that regard.

Of Note : The  Dark Blue spot in the sea of light blue is Troy 6 carried by Candidate Ethan D. Baker and  the only precinct to be awarded to a candidate other than the big three.

The City of Bloomfield Hills  is the easy to find rectangle a diagonal line which is Woodward Avenue. The Green top is Precinct 1 City Hall. The light blue bottom is Precinct 2 Congregational Church.  The Bulge or little mountain found inside the rectangle is Cranbrook Schools.
