Hungarian Anyone ? Deadline for Birmingham Community Education Hungarian courses is Monday Noon !

Introductory Hungarian Lessons are offered at Birmingham  Adult Community Education (Seaholm High School ) this spring. The enrollment  deadline is Monday April 9th. To hold class three students are necessary. So far two have signed up. While Hungarian  is not a  high volume language  there is a large Hungarian Community in the Metro Detroit/ Toledo Ohio area but a classroom taught  Hungarian  lessons in the United States are a rare occurence.

That is not to say that Hungarians are particularly reticent . Hungarian  film and television productions are booming and examples often with English subtitles appear on You Tube. You may also take Hungarian Lessons on You Tube or on line. A particularly good primer that will take you through the basics of the language, explain it's roots, difficulties, and bonuses (relatively easy pronunciation and no gender)  can be found at
Hungarian Language Course  .

Americans of Hungarian descent  once included comedians   Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Ernie Kovacs.
Later in the year the Birmingham Community House will be offering a tour of Eastern Europe which will include Budapest.Taking an introductory course in Hungarian will have you reading the headlines in  Budapest newspapers, counting to 100, and asking "how much " or "where" or "when" questions in Magyar rather simply saying "do you speak in English" in English.  The more diligent students of the Birmingham Community Education Introduction to Hungarian class   will also have some idead of what Hungarians say to other Hungarians in Hungarian. Their conversation like ours consists of a lot of "Who, What, When, Where, and How" topics. In other words just the words you need to get around Budapest  and perhaps even dare  to see a Czech  movie with Hungarian subtitles. Or as they say linguistically "doing the high wire act without a net." Your friends will be amazed !
Your instructor in this new adventure will be Alla-Lushnikova Abbott who also teaches the  more popular  Russian Courses at Birmingham Community Education.  She learned her Hungarian at Moscow U which means at one time she didn't speak any Hungarian either. For  more information or to enroll  call 248-203-3800.
